If you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong.

New update to Edgar Brooks’ Spitfire Notes

First, I’m very happy to say the positive response to my posting of Edgar’s Spitfire notes has been astounding! Well over 6,000 visitors have so far stopped in to take a look.

And the response for additions to the notes has also been very good. I’d like to extend a special thanks to Steven Eisenman and Frank Daniels for their submissions. It appears I wasn’t the only one who archived Edgar’s work.

I’d like to thank the Thames Valley Scale Model Club for allowing me to republish their obituary for Edgar on this website. If you’d like to know more about Edgar, you can read through that.

I’ve added the new material in sections either under a General heading, or in a specific Mark heading where appropriate. In a few cases I duplicated some small sections in both areas, if it was equally applicable.

In some areas, there are similar sets of notes. For instance, Edgar posted similar material on Spitfire seats in forums and in private emails. Instead of trying to take on the role of editor and merge them, I simply present them in their full, and let the reader extrapolate what they will.

Because some of the additions did not have the full context of the rest of the discussion/email, at times it may seem as if you “drop into the middle”, which, in effect, we are. But rather than make conjecture as to what was discussed, I simply present them as is. If you do have input- with documentation- with regards to the full context/discussion, please do contact me, as I believe those additions will help clarify a few areas.

In all, the size of the document doubled, from 16 to 32 pages, so there is considerable new material.

I think what has been fun to see is when Edgar’s personality comes through- often direct, yet very humble at times, and displaying a wit both dry and impish.

The latest version of the notes can be found here on the Edgar Brooks’ Spitfire Notes page.

Again, thanks to everyone for their support, encouragement and enthusiasm for this project. If you’d like to contribute to the project, please follow the link (above) to the Notes page, and there are details there.

Thank you for doing this and providing us with the wealth of information and insight, sir.

  2. Thanks for doing this, Jon. Over a period of some years I had a number of offline discussions with Edgar about Spitfires. At some point I’d like to pass on the Spitfire-related material to you for inclusion in his legacy notes here. Keep it going!

      Please do, Steve!
