Modelmaking Guru is someone who holds a special place for me. In 2017, I was getting burned out on the hobby. I’d spent over a decade building WWII single engined fighters. And while Id loved doing it for many years, I finally hit a wall. I was about ready to call it quits
I’d been searching around YouTube for some ideas to rekindle my interest, and happened up the Modelmaking Guru channel. He was working on something called a Perfect Grade Zaku II. I didn’t know what Perfecet Grade Meant, or what a Zaku was – let alone a version II of it.
But what captured my attention was the fun and excitement that came through. It really was infectious. I decided to give those Gundam things a try – and that made all the difference. I not only stayed in the hobby, but found myself completely “pivoting” to the scifi genre.
Modelmaking Guru And His Teaching Style
Mike “Foxx” Wolf is the man behind the Guru. He’s one of the funniest, warmest creators you’ll find on YouTube. He knows what he’s doing when it comes to scale modeling/ Yet he’s also easy going enough to admit when he doesn’t know something, yet will dive headfirst into it figure out how to do it. And then share it with viewers.
I think it is that wonderfully warm, slightly quirky, easily approachable teaching style that really grabbed me. Even when showing advanced techniques, he always takes time to explain the how and why that is easy for any level modeler to learn.
If you’ve not checked out his channel before, be sure and do so. His work includes Gundam, Warhammer, traditional models, various scifi franchises, and much more. It is as informative as it is entertaining.
I am so very grateful to Foxx not only for his time for this interview, but for his influence in my own modeling journey. He is a great friend, and I am thankful for him.
Enjoy the interview!
