When I’d first began to explore the world of scifi after a decade of building mostly WWII single-engined fighters, I was fascinated by the huge variety of kits that were available. Gunpla, Ma. K, Warhammer, Bandai Star Wars, and so many more things gave it all a “kid in a candy” store feel.
And what I found really cool was the number of oddball kits that I ran into. Because the latter half of scifi is the word “fiction”, the field is ripe for imagination. And because there’s nobody standing in the nacho line with a mustard stained shirt at the Nationals declaring “that’s not accurate”, most folks are happy to just build their plastic toys and let everyone do the same. (Most… 🤷♂️)
When I saw this stompy-spider-crab-dealie with ridiculous big shootie pew-pews, I was hooked on building it.
Now, the background for this is one of those “what if WWII had gone on” type of things. I’m not a big fan of that notion, and I’m not sure why so many are. But at the same time I get the technical fascination. I’ve played Command and Conquer Red Alert enough to get that part!
But I didn’t really care about the fictional lore of this thing. It just looked cool. The kit itself is not great. It’s not bad… no warning labels needed like “Special Hobby” or “Nitto”. But as a canvas for painting and weathering, it’s just silly fun.
My original plan had been to imagine it as being in the Maschinen Krieger universe, so I painted it up that way. I’d intended to do a large diorama base, with some 1/35 SAFS figures nearby. But as so often happens when I get stirred up to do a diorama, when it came time to start, I found my enthusiasm had drained away, so I jut called the stompy-spider-crab done.
But it was fun. No doubt about it. Good silly fun.
