Revell’s 1/48 F/A-18E Super Hornet- Big Fun For $14

I finally finished Revell’s 1/48 scale F/A-18E. I didn’t intend for it to take this long. I’d started building the kit in early December 2016, with every intention of finishing it within a typical (for me) time frame. But commission build projects, several changes of mind on decals, and just life in general turned this into one of those “work on it when you can” projects. However, the last few weeks i’ve brought it back out to put more emphasis on it, and now it’s done.

And given that the base kit was priced at about $14 (with a coupon at Hobby Lobby), I am very happy with how it turned out.

The fit of the kit is not bad at all. Not perfect, but a 12 year old would have no problem assembling it. Some elements are not up to the standard of a more expensive kit, such as the really awful looking decals, and the poorly shaped Sidewinders.

Still…. $14.

I did go with some aftermarket decals, as I wanted to model an operational bird. The markings are for VFA-105 (“The Gunslingers”). Though they are from Super Scale, they’re not really very good looking. Not as bad as the kit decals, but probably the worst effort I’ve seen from Super Scale.

There’s quite a lot to like about this kit though, and if a little more was put into it- a new seat, better missiles, and a more extensive decal set, this is really an excellent representation of the Super Bug.

I really enjoyed it. I think it’s probably the best fun to price ratio I’ve ever found in a kit.

  1. Superb looking super bug Jon – nice work. I agree, that’s not a bad looking kit for $14!

Beautiful build! I just started the same kit. I’m pretty impressed so far by the cockpit detail given it’s an $18 kit. However I haven’t seen what the fit looks like yet. Although the sidewinders are horrible. I agree!
