Painting a Horus Heresy Salamander was not originally on my project list. I tend to stick to Warhammer 40K vehicles, as that’s what I feel most comfortable doing. It’s not that I can’t paint miniatures, of course. But I’ve never really been confident in my abilities doing so.
However, with the release of Games Workshop’s Horus Heresy: Age of Darkness game, I’ve been seeing these Space Marines in the “beakie boy” Mk. VI power armor all over. YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, blogs, local gaming shops – they’ve really been quite popular.
I finally decided to pick up a few and give them a go.
Painting a Horus Heresy Salamander
The game itself focuses on the Imperial Fists and the Sons of Horus, but the miniatures can be painted in any Legion’s colors. (Do NOT make the mistake of calling them chapters… 🤦♂️😄) I wanted to do something a little different, so I looked around at other color schemes.
I’d seen a cool “how-to” shot Darren Latham had posted on his Instagram account. And while he wasn’t painting Salamanders specifically, I decided to use that guide and opt for a Space Marine from that Legion.
I also stretched way out side my comfort zone in how I painted the sword.
All in all, I think it turned out looking very much like a senior-aged adult with poor eyesight and shaky hands painted a mini in several colors. 🤣
But I had a lot of fun – and learned quite a bit in the process, too. That’s the main things, right?
